Celebrating Justice Sotomayor

2 on the Beat was on summer vacation when the U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination of  Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court.

I missed some of the local celebrations, but  on Wednesday  night I ran into several people, including Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia and political consultant Marisol Rodriguez,  who are still on a natural high following the historic occasion.

They were wearing t-shirts with the slogan, “I love (heart) Wise Latina Women.”

Justice Sotomayor is only the third  woman and first Hispanic to join the  highest court in the land.  During her heated confirmation hearings,  several U.S. Senators who opposed her  nomination criticized her for referring to herself as a  “Wise Latina Woman”  during a speech in 2001.

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences,  would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white  male who hasn’t lived that life.” said then Appellate Judge Sotomayor.

Critics accused her of being a reverse racist and some argued that her words meant that she was saying that  Latina women make  better judges than white men.

But supporters of  Justice Sotomayor  believe  she was simply saying that her personal experiences as a minority and a woman, make her more empathetic to those who are seeking justice in the court system.

Her supporters say she is a role model for all Americans, but especially for Latina Women!
