2 on The Beat has learned this afternoon that the Houston Police Officers Union, under President Gary Blankinship, plans to announce on Monday that it will endorse Gene Locke for Mayor of Houston.
(The above is an old photo – if you see me out on a story, then you know I aways carry a digital camera)
The HPOU endorsement is one of the most highly coveted endorsements sought by candidates seeking office.
The organization represents about five – thousand men and women in blue, from officers to those who hold the rank of captain in the department.
Locke was also recently endorsed by the Houston Professional Firefighters Association.
While significant, the HPOU endorsement certainly doesn’t gaurantee that Locke is going to be successful in November.
As I reported earlier today Controller/Mayoral candidate Annise Parker has also lined up a significant number of organizations to support her campaign.
HOPE, SEIU, Harris County Democrats, and UNITE HERE Local 25 have all endorsed Parker.
The endorsements usually come with a political campaign donation, and a promise that the members will volunteer for the candidate leading up to the election.
However, the most important endorsement comes f rom you, the voter on election day.
