Senator Hutchison Launches Independence Tour

One Day before the start of early voting across Texas, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison unveiled a new campaign theme at stops in Houston and Richmond, Fort Bend County.

Monday  she officially launched the “Declare Your Independence”  tour  and asked voters to declare their independence from  Governor Rick Perry “a governor who has trampled over their fundamental rights with mandates meant to benefit his political allies, ” said Hutchison.

The theme coincides with the March 2nd Republican primary which is also Texas Independence Day.

The Senator was animated during speeches at both locations, but the crowd in Houston lacked energy. (Earlier I quoted someone’s description of the crowd, but a KBH supporter pointed out that many in attendance were shocked to hear about a tragic and deadly accident involving the son of  one of  the Senator’s top supporters who was to serve as the event’s mc)

In his absence, Congressman Ted Poe and Astros owner Drayton McLane did a nice  job trying to rally the troops at the Houston “conservatives for Kay” event.

At this point, it appears the Senator is working hard to make the runoff election against Governor Perry. All recent polls indicate she is trailing the incumbent governor and only slightly ahead of  Debra Medina.

On a personal note – Senator Hutchison must have also declared her independence from the news media. She would not answer questions and her staff said she had a tight schedule. I find it strange that a candidate would not give the press at least one minute on the day before the start of early voting.
