Election infrastructure normal as early voting begins
Houston, TX–There will be 824 direct-recording electronic voting machines (eSlates) dispersed among 37 voting sites as in-person early voting begins in Harris County for the Nov. 2, 2010 election. The deployment of eSlates for this early voting period is on par with the 752 units allocated in the last similar election in 2006. Early voting by personal appearance for this election cycle is scheduled to run from October 18th to 29th.
“Considering the unforeseen catastrophe we experienced just seven weeks ago, the election infrastructure is as normal as it can be”, said Harris County Clerk Beverly Kaufman, the chief elections officer of the county, as she encouraged voters to take advantage of the early voting option. On Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, an early morning fire destroyed the Harris County Election Technology Center (ETC). All of Harris County’s election equipment was destroyed.
Despite the disaster, according to the County Clerk, the early voting experience this year will be very familiar to Harris County voters in comparison to the last similar election in 2006. During the twelve day early voting period the hours of operation will be the same, the complement of voting equipment available to voters will be the same and the ballot will be long. The only significant difference from the last gubernatorial election is that now there are four more early voting locations available to County voters.
The cumulative total of items on this year’s ballot is 175 compared to 193 to four years ago. The Nov. 2010 ballot has more contests and candidates but less propositions. Like four years ago, there are no countywide propositions on the ballot. Overall, depending on the political subdivision a voter resides, each voter will only see about 90 contests on their specific ballot and not all voters will find a proposition on their ballot.
To vote, a person may present one of the following documents: a voter registration card, a driver’s license, a picture identification of any kind, a birth certificate, a U.S. Citizenship or Naturalization certificate, a U.S passport, a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter. First time voters who registered by mail and did not provide their driver’s license number or identification number will need to provide another form of identification other than their voter registration certificate.
