Strong Turnout On The First Day of Early Voting

After a massive fire destroyed all of  Harris County’s voting equipment earlier this year,  election officials and political candidates urged everyone to take advantage of early voting.

It appears the message was heard loud and clear.

An impressive number of  people showed up at the polls to cast their ballots on the first day of early voting.

Will the trend continue or was this just a one day reaction to some of  the GOTV efforts over the weekend?

Here’s the report from Hector DeLeon, Director of  Communications and Voter Outreach in the office of  Harris County Clerk.

26,051 persons were processed for voting today. (Monday, October 18, 2010)

In the last Gubernatorial election in Harris county, on the 1st day of early voting, 8,545 persons were processed for voting.

Today’s total is not a record. It just shows that the vote is up 204 percent at this point, if you compare the first day of the 2010 early voting period to the first day of 2006 early voting period, the last similar election.
