Battle Over TX. House Speaker Comes To Houston

Speaker Straus

There isn’t a Houston area lawmaker in the running to  become Speaker of the Texas House of  Represenatives, but some local tea party activitists still want their voices heard.

This Friday,  November 19th, they will  rally  outside State Rep. Larry Taylor’s district office located at 174 Calder Road Suite 116 in League City.
The group says its  goal is  to force  Taylor  to  call for a caucus of  House Republicans before the vote for Speaker of the House is taken.  The Galveston County Tea Party group wants  republicans to unify around someone other that current House Speaker Joe Straus of  San Antonio. Rep.  Taylor is the Chairman of the Republican Caucus committee.

Meanwhile, There is an interesting article about how some republicans are using Straus’ Jewish faith against him in this heated battle:

Back to the local protest – these are some of the group’s complaints against Speaker Straus –  in their own words:

During the 81st legislative session, Joe Straus and his lieutenants burned conservative Texans over and over again.

 * Straus lieutenant, Vicki Truitt, lead a push to increase Texas’ gas tax.

* Straus’ Elections Chair Todd Smith killed Voter ID in committee.

* Todd Smith authored and passed McCain Feingold type election law, only to have it vetoed.

* No hearings were allowed on spending limits.

* Legislation to provide business tax exemptions to small businesses wasn’t allowed.

We want a conservative Speaker not the one voted for by Democrats and eleven Republicans.

No compromise. No surrender. No Straus for Texas Speaker of the House.
