Sonogram Bill Passes Texas Senate

On Thursday, the Texas Senate passed a controversial sonogram bill sponsored by Senator Dan Patrick (R-Houston)

The bill would require doctors to perform a sonogram within two hours of  performing an abortion procedure.  It would also require the doctor to describe or show the images of the fetus to a woman who wants to end her pregnancy.

“Today is a great day,” said Senator Patrick, “We are one step closer, once again, to making sure that women have the chance to be fully informed before making a life-changing decisions for themselves and their unborn child.”

In urging the House to take up the measure, Senator Patrick said, “every day we delay the passage of this bill, 200 more babies have no chance to survive because their mothers because their mothers are unable to give fully informed consent.”

Governor Perry also reacted to the sonogram legislation saying, ““I commend the Texas Senate for quickly passing SB 16, an important achievement in our efforts to protect life. Considering the magnitude of the decision to have an abortion, it is crucial that Texans understand what is truly at stake. We know that when someone has all the information, the decision to choose life becomes clear. I look forward to working with House members to pass this legislation quickly, to ensure Texans are fully informed when considering such an important decision.”
