Steelers Quarterback Gives Donation to K-9 Unit

 (news release from Sheriff’s Office)

(HOUSTON, TX) — The Houston Texans came out as top dogs in their gritty football game Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. But Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has now racked up an impressive statistic with the Sheriff’s Office and the law-abiding public in the Houston area.

Through his charitable foundation, “Big Ben” donated $9,000 that will be used to provide the Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit with a dog trained in narcotics detection and patrol assistance. The gift will add a 16th dog to the team.

Two days after cheering the Texans’ victory, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia expressed thanks and cheered today for the 6-foot-5 quarterback’s big heart.

“Ben Roethlisberger scored big on the field that matters most to me – keeping Harris County safe!,” said Garcia, a Houston native who has rooted for the Texans and Oilers to triumph over the Steelers for years. “Increasing the number of K-9s that can detect drugs, bombs and hidden humans has been important in my effort to keep our community as crime-free as possible.”

“Maybe it helps that we both wear Black and Gold!” Garcia added, referring to the Steelers and Sheriff’s Office uniform colors.

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation distributes grants to police and fire departments in Pittsburgh and the cities and surrounding communities of each regular season away game for the Steelers this season. The Foundation invited law enforcement agencies in the nine cities to submit proposals detailing their needs.

The foundation worked through The Giving Back Fund and K9s4cops of Houston to provide the funds to the Sheriff’s Office. The donation of a dog acquired with Roethlisberger funding will be submitted for approval by Harris County Commissioners Court. K9s4cops donated dogs to the Sheriff’s Office in April.
