State Representative Sylvester Turner’s popular Family Day at the Park will return on Saturday, April 9.
The 4th Annual Family Day features free food, music, baseball, games for kids and activities for seniors, all on tap for the event from 2 until 7 p.m. at Sylvester Turner Park, 2800 W. Little York. Admission is free.
Last year’s event saw over 10,000 people enjoying the beautiful weather, dancing to the music and cheering the baseball players. “Each year gets bigger and better,” said Rep. Turner. “We expect to see everyone from Acres Homes at the park this year.”
J. Paul Jr. and the Zydeco Nubreeds will again provide the music. Youth league baseball games will be held on the field in the south end of the park. Moonwalks will be stationed throughout the park, along with face painters. Carver High School students will present dramatic and dance performances on the Family Day second stage near the food court. A College Fair featuring TSU, Prairie View A&M, Lone Star College and Houston Community College will be held to help local students choose a college. Comcast will provide hamster balls, giant inflatable balls that people can roll around in, and the Mercedes Mobile Entertainment Theater. The Theater contains eight (8) state-of-the-art video gaming screens which include satellite TV, Blue Ray and DVD, for a wide variety of simultaneous gaming entertainment options.
The Houston Astros and Major League Baseball will bring their Wanna Play Games, letting kids test their baseball abilities. The U.S. Army will also provide plenty of activities, including a rock climbing wall, a fitness station and a dog tag machine. The Army will also exhibit a race car and an Apache helicopter.
The Houston Astros/MLB Urban Youth Academy will be celebrating its first anniversary at 12 noon. As part of that celebration, the TSU and Prairie View baseball teams will play a regularly scheduled Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Academy’s “Show Field” on the north side of the park beginning at 1 p.m. The Army’s Silver Wings parachutists will make a special delivery of the balls that will be used for the first pitch.
Free parking will be provided at several locations with METRO shuttles running from 1 p.m. through 7 p.m. The parking locations are: Carver High School, 2100 South Victory; Harris Academy, 3130 Holden Forest Drive; Living Word Fellowship Church, 7350 West T.C.
