State Representative Sylvester Turner (D-Houston) has been named the chairman of a new legislative select committee to review the state and local government response to Hurricane Ike.

Rep. Turner was tapped by Speaker of the Texas House Tom Craddick to lead the group which includes several Houston area lawmakers including, State Rep. Craig Eiland (D-Galveston) and State Rep. Dennis Bonnen (R-Angleton)

The committee will also try to identify issues for the legislature to tackle in order to prepare for future natural disasters and their aftermath.

“I am very honored to take on the task of reviewing the complex issues which surfaced during and as a result of  Hurricane Ike,” Rep. Turner said. “I look forward to listening and working with all impacted communities and developing well-thoughtout recommendations that will enhance and create emergency preparation and response systems for the State of Texas that are responsive, inclusive and efficient.”
