Farouk Shami Joins Maria Bello, Patricia Arquette, and

Kim Kardashian on Charity Mission to Haiti

IMMEDIATE RELEASE –In the true spirit of the giving season, Farouk Shami, founder and chairman of Farouk Systems, makers of CHI and BioSilk, collaborated with Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, actresses Maria Bello (co-founder of We Advance) and Patricia Arquette (co-founder of Give Love) and the Sow a Seed organization to spread a little holiday cheer to the Haitian children and families who need it most. Farouk accompanied and provided air transportation for the group’s four day relief trip, December 8-11, 2011 to Port-au-Prince, Haiti and some of the country’s poorest areas in need of aid.

To ensure the scheduled relief trip occurred as planned, Farouk and the We Advance team stocked the CHI plane with medical supplies, hygiene kits, 1,000 CHI Organics kits and other basic necessities and took flight. Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian joined Farouk on the CHI plane. Included on the group’s whirlwind agenda: visiting the Artists for Peace & Justice School, replenishing supplies at the We Advance clinics, partaking in weekly bath day activities, attending a Haitian fashion show put on by local women and designers, and joining Sow a Seed for their annual Christmas party bringing joy and holiday gifts to 500 orphans from across the island. The trip commenced with an intimate meeting with the President of Haiti, Michel Martelly, to discuss the current state of affairs in Haiti.

“I am extremely grateful, and humbled, that we are able to provide and be a part of this incredible opportunity,” Farouk said. “To be able to give the gift of clean water, health care and hygiene products is inexplicable. Farouk Systems Wins Against Counterfeiting

Federal Court Decides in favor of

Farouk Systems, Inc vs. Costco Wholesale Corporation

Immediate release—Houston-based Farouk Systems, manufacturer of CHI® and BioSilk® brands filed a lawsuit on October 27, 2009 charging the Seattle-based Costco Wholesale Corporation for violating the Lanhm Act which prohibits the selling of counterfeit, non-genuine goods.

After nearly two years of litigation, the jury agreed and found that Costco had indeed sold counterfeit CHI-branded merchandise consistent with the charges made by Farouk Systems.

“We are pleased that the jury returned a verdict in our favor and found Costco liable for selling counterfeit merchandise bearing the CHI trademark,” says General Counsel Wisam Ghuneim representing Farouk Systems. “This verdict is a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against buyers, distributors, and sellers of counterfeit and fake goods.  It is of paramount importance that retailers employ better and prudent practices to ensure that the products they sell the public are genuine.  Not only do counterfeit and fake goods infringe on intellectual property rights of brand owners, but they also take much needed jobs away from the American economy”.

Farouk Shami, founder and chairman of Farouk Systems adds, “I’m very pleased with the verdict and this shows that Farouk Systems will fight known counterfeiting and will preserve the integrity and authenticity of CHI products consumers purchase.”

This win comes nearly a year after Farouk Systems had secured a judgment against multiple Chinese entities for selling and distributing counterfeit CHI irons over the internet.  In that case, a federal judge awarded Farouk Systems a monetary judgment in the amount of $304 million dollars against the defendants.

Could Houston Lure the Ms. Universe Pageant?
November 30, 2010

Houston businessman and former political candidate Farouk Shami isn’t shy about being in the spotlight.  But on Tuesday afternoon, Farouk was  keeping quiet about the purpose of his visit to city hall.

Sources told 2 on The Beat that the founder of  one of the world’s most famous hair straightening irons, the CHI, is trying to bring the Ms. Universe pageant to our city.

A successful pageant like that would potentially bring revenue, along with thousands of visitors and millions of  international viewers to our city.

Farouk would not comment on the pageant, however, he was kind enough to stop and pose for a picture  while standing in front of his beautiful chauffeur driven Bently.

Farouk Shami Endorses Governor Rick Perry
October 18, 2010

Former Texas gubernatorial candidate Farouk Shami has endorsed Governor Rick Perry for re-election.

Shami is the founder and chairman of Farouk Systems, a company that manufactures Biosilk and CHI hair products. He spent millions of dollars on his campaign before losing the Democratic Party primary to Bill White.

A few weeks ago Shami invited both Perry and White to speak at a forum for Arab-American community leaders.

““Gov. Perry has not only been true to the values that matter most to the people of Texas, he is also a conservative leader that has led our state in job creation and renewable energy,” said Farouk Shami. “As a former Democratic gubernatorial candidate, I believe jobs and the future for Texans is beyond partisanship. I am proud to endorse Gov. Perry for the general election. His proven track record of helping businesses grow and invest for a cleaner and stronger tomorrow is the reason why he is the best choice for Texas governor.”

“It is an honor to receive Farouk Shami’s endorsement of my re-election,” said Gov. Perry. “His entrepreneurship and dedication to Texas jobs and the environment is a profound example of what our state needs to continue leading the nation. Bringing 1,200 jobs back to our country and Texas shows a vote of confidence in the Texas economy and the work ethic of Texans. I look forward to working with Farouk so we can keep Texas the envy of the nation and continue creating jobs so that every Texan who wants one has one.”

Perry and White Make Houston Campaign Stops
September 20, 2010

Governor Rick Perry and former Houston Mayor Bill White spoke to Arab American voters in Houston Monday night at a political event that was organized by former  candidate and hair care magnet Farouk Shami.

The candidates appeared on the same stage, but spoke more than one hour and half apart from each other.

During his speech, Gov. Perry touted the state’s strong economy and told the crowd, “Voters will look at the economy and realize that Texas is better than any state in the country,” said Perry.

Later, White told the crowd that it was time for a change. “If you want somebody to do reality based politics, if you believe we deserve better than a soundbite, then I’m asking for your support.

White answered  questions from the crowd while Perry left after his speech.

Farouk Shami, who ran in the  democratic party gubernatorial  primary, told 2 On The Beat that he hasn’t decided if  he will endorse either candidate before the November 2nd election.

Miss USA Visits Houston and Channel 2
May 24, 2010

Newly crowned Miss USA,  Rima Fakih , made a stop in Houston on Monday to visit Farouk Shami, the Hair Care Businessman and former candidate for Governor of  Texas.

Shami’s company, CHI International, is a major sponsor of the Miss USA pageant, and he was as giddy as a kid in a candy store as he introduced his new sweetheart  to the staff at KPRC Local 2.

The former Miss Michigan beat the tough competition to win the coveted title of Miss USA, becoming the first  Arab American, first immigrant and first Muslim to hold the Miss USA title.

I spoke with her briefly,  but I didn’t have the opportunity to ask her about the controversy surrounding her reign.

Some critics  have taken issue with her religion and ethnic heritage.

And then there’s that sexy picture problem: in 2007, Rima was a contestant  in a stripper pole dance contest sponsored by a Detroit radio station.

That image is making the rounds on the internet.

If she’s feeling burdened by  any of that, she didn’t show it.

Rima never stopped smiling during her brief visit to KPRC, and she was extremely nice to everyone she met.  🙂

Farouk Shami Thanks Supporters
March 3, 2010

Statement by Farouk Shami

“I want to thank each and every person who has given their time, energy and votes to my campaign for Governor of Texas.  Although this wasn’t the outcome we’d hoped for, do not get discouraged.
A defeat is only a defeat if you let it stop you.  I will not let today’s results stop me.  Although I will not be our nominee for Governor, I will continue to fight for those I have met on the campaign trail.  I will continue to fight to bring jobs to Texas.  I will continue to fight for equality in our education system.  I will continue to support candidates who fight for all Texans.
I ask for each of you to join me.  Do not give up hope.  Continue to support the cause.  Eventually, we will overcome all obstacles and accomplish our goal, real change for Texas.
Thank you again for your support.  It means the world to me, more than I can ever express in words.”
