The Texas Legislative Internship Program – TLIP – is a premier internship program that introduces the best and brightest young Texans to the functions of government and the value of public service.  The program, developed in 1990, is sponsored by Senator Rodney Ellis and administered by The Mickey Leland Center on World Hunger and Peace at Texas Southern University.  Since its inception, more than 400 students accepted into the TLIP program have interned with members of the Texas Legislature, the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.  This year, 63 interns are working in and around the state Capitol during the current legislative session.

Meet The Only Democrat In The Race For Governor of Texas
August 10, 2009

With so much attention being paid to the highly anticipated GOP primary battle between Rick Perry and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, it’s easy to forget that  Texas Democrats are also fielding their own candidates for the office of  Governor.

Some loyal Democrats are urging former Austin Mayor Kirk Watson to jump in the race, but so far, only one Democrat has declared his intention to explore a run for that position.

Tom Schieffer, is President of the Texas Rangers Baseball Team, a former United States Ambassador to Australia and Japan, and a former state legislator. (and the brother of  noted CBS anchor Bob Schieffer)

He’s also a really good friend of  former President George W. Bush, and  that could create some friction among  grass roots members  of the party, who think that Schieffer is the wrong person to represent them on the ballot.

Enter State Represenative Senfronia Thompson.

The influential democrat is hosting a V.I.P.  Meet and Greet reception for Schieffer on Monday, August 17, 2009.

The reception is being held at 4212 Almeda Road in Houston’s 3rd Ward, from 6:00 P.M until 9:00 P.M.

It’s your chance to shake hands with Schieffter and ask him why he wants to be Governor of  Texas, and why he is running as a Democrat!
